An electroplated diamond plate that will keep it's flatness almost indefinitely. The diamond particles wear slowly and are dispersed throughout the surface evenly.
Size : 210 x 75 x 12
Although this diamond plate can be useful for very rough sharpening, repairing chips and restoring a blade's profile - the biggest advantage of an Atoma Diamond Plate is it's ability to effectively flatten surface of your whetstones.
When the diamond particles on the surface become too worn for the plate to be used effectively, replacement sheets are available to be adhesively mounted on to the aluminium base of your old plate.
If it is used only for lapping whetstones, this diamond plate will be effective for a long time. This plate will leave coarse scratches on the surface of your whetstone. For medium to fine stones, it would be ideal to follow up the rough flattening process with either a finer Atoma plate or a nagura. Always flatten the surface of your whetstone with adequate amounts of water.
The plate is very aggressive when it is new, the whetstone should be rinsed thoroughly after flattening. After some use, the diamond particles will become slightly less sharp and the resulting slurry from flattening the whetstone can be left on if you choose to. This lapping slurry has the advantage of speeding up the sharpening process and can improve tactile feedback during the initial stages of the blade contacting the whetstone.
We do not advise using this plate for thinning the bevels of kitchen knives, but if you choose to do so we recommend doing this together with a small amount of dish soap mixed with water, or other suitable cleansers or lubricants.
